Major Nelson Tweets About Halo ODST Bans *Update: MS Detects Copies?*
>> From Major Nelson's Twitter (via team-xecuter.com):
Be careful folks! RT @Stepto Hrm. I spy with my little eye some *illegitimate* ODST players. No early play for you. Commencing permabans.
*Update* Seems like Microsoft claims they can detect illegitimate copies. Xbox Live Chief of Police Stephen Toulouse told kotaku.com:
I can be clear however that this applies to illegitimate copies only, the ban covers the Xbox LIVE account and could possibly include their console depending on the results of our investigations (which are ongoing). We do this from time to time with titles to combat piracy. If a user happens to purchase a legit copy of Halo 3: ODST early, then our problem is not with the user but the retailer who broke the street date. Those individuals will not be punished.
Microsoft lifts Xbox 360 minimum 720p, anti-aliasing mandate for devs
>> From joystiq.com:
In a column published today on Develop, Black Rock Studio (Pure, Split/Second) technical director David Jeffrries revealed that Microsoft has removed an item from its TCRs (Technical Certification Requirements) that stated all Xbox 360 games must run at a minimum of 1280x720 (720p) resolution if the system is in HD mode. According to Jeffries, this was done earlier this year so that developers could be "free to make the trade-off between resolution and image quality as we see fit."
Joystiq has confirmed with a trusted source familiar with Microsoft's TCRs that Jeffries' claim is legit. Not only that, but, as of March 2009, Xbox 360 developers are no longer required to utilize full-screen anti-aliasing in their games. The elimination of both requirements is especially noteworthy since the console maker had touted that all 360 games would run at a minimum of 720p with at least 2x FSAA since before the hardware launched. After 4 Years, Has MS Finally Solved the Xbox RRoD Problem?
>> From gizmodo.com:
FairTrade, the company that's making this claim, bases their little theory on failure rates correlated with purchase date. Before the Jasper chipset, they were atrocious. But after? Not too bad!
"In Q4 2008, Jasper units started arriving, although we believe units purchased during this period continued to be a mix of Falcon and Jasper models. Even with this mix, we projected the 1-year failure rate to drop below 4%. Furthermore, when looking at over 500 units purchased in 2009, fewer than 1% of customers have reported a RROD error as of Aug 2009. It is still too early to definitively assert that Jasper has given RROD a knockout punch, but such an argument may be pronounceable in the coming months."
That's down from an (admittedly) conservative RRoD rate of about 12%, which accounted for more than half of the console's overall failures, which stood at 23.7%. They explicitly say it's too early to call this one, but early signs--even if all the numbers are skewed a little low--are definitely promising.
Japan Gets Xbox 360 Price Cuts
>> From edge-online.com:
From September 10, the Xbox 360 Elite will retail for 29,800 yen ($321/£199), down from 39,800 yen. The unit will no longer ship with an HDMI cable.
The price of the 60GB Pro unit, which currently retails for 29,800 yen, will be open to retailers, meaning individual stockists can price it at their discretion. As in the US and Europe, the model is to be discontinued, meaning retailers won't be receiving any new stock.
Similar price cuts will also come into effect in other parts of the Asia-Pacific region on September 10.
Microsoft, Doritos Partner For New Consumer Game Concept Challenge
>> From the press release:
As one of the leading consumer brands to successfully cross over into the world of video games, Doritos tortilla chips -- a flagship snack brand within PepsiCo's Frito-Lay division -- today announced it will once again offer the creative opportunity of a lifetime to video game lovers with the chance to design a new Xbox LIVE® Arcade game. Today marks the return of "Unlock Xbox," a ground-breaking video game design contest that puts the creative control to design an Xbox LIVE Arcade game in consumers' hands.
The Unlock Xbox contest, which is driven by a collaboration between the Doritos brand and Microsoft, originated in 2007 and lead to the creation of the record-breaking "Doritos Dash of Destruction," the first consumer-created Xbox LIVE Arcade game, which went on to become the fastest Xbox LIVE Arcade game to reach one million downloads.
Starting today, people in North America are invited to submit game concepts that embody the big, bold and intense spirit of the Doritos brand, for the chance to have their idea developed into an Xbox LIVE Arcade game for the Xbox 360. Fans can review the submission terms and enter their ideas via video submission through October 4, 2009 at www.unlockxbox.com.
"We are always looking for new ways to connect with fans and give them unique opportunities to express their creativity in a way only Doritos and our partners can deliver," said Ann Mukherjee, group vice president, marketing, Frito-Lay. "Many of the people who love Doritos also love gaming, and this innovative program gives our fans a chance to live their dreams."
Ten quarter-finalists, which will be chosen by the Doritos brand and Xbox 360 and announced by Xbox's Major Nelson, will embark on the journey of a lifetime as they compete to transform their game concept into a reality. From in-person pitch meetings at Microsoft Game Studios with the "Godfathers of Gaming" including Kudo Tsunoda, to an online voting round, gamers will get to experience the incredible process of bringing an Xbox LIVE Arcade game to life. Ultimately, two will be developed into Xbox LIVE Arcade games available for download in fall 2010, with one fan-selected grand prize winner scoring a $50,000 gaming consultant project for Doritos.
"By bringing their brand to the Xbox LIVE audience, Doritos has the opportunity to reach a subscriber base of more than 20 million." said Mark Kroese, general manager of Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices Advertising Business Group. "The first 'Dinosaur Dash of Destruction Game' was a record breaker in terms of first week downloads. We're excited to see what this round of creativity brings."
Giving video game fans and Doritos chip-lovers everywhere even more reason to get in the game, between November 29, 2009 and December 31, 2009, visitors to www.unlockxbox.com will have a chance to instantly win great prizes as they log on to cast their vote among the finalists. Promotion details and rules will be available on www.unlockxbox.com during the promotion period.
